GONIO · ADJARA · GEORGIA — THE BLACK SEA

APSAROS

The eastern gate of the classical world, rising again between fortress and sea.

CHAPTER I

THE RECORD

Two thousand years, kept in writing and in stone.

Before noon we reached Apsaros. Five cohorts were stationed there. We paid the soldiers and inspected the arms, the walls, the ditch, the sick and the provisions.

ADAPTED FROM ARRIAN’S REPORT TO THE EMPEROR HADRIAN

Periplus of the Euxine Sea, c. 131 CE

  1. BEFORE THE RECORD

    THE LEGEND

Arrian himself records the older story: that the place bears the name of Apsyrtos of Colchis, brother of Medea, from the world of the Golden Fleece—and that his tomb was shown at the fort.

Even the legend arrives with a source.

  2. 1ST CENTURY CE

    THE FORT

Rome establishes a fortress on this ground: an eastern stronghold on the Euxine shore, where the Mediterranean world met the routes of the Caucasus and Asia.

  3. C. 131 CE

    THE EMPEROR’S AUDIT

Arrian, governor of Cappadocia, sails this coast and reports what he finds directly to Hadrian. Pay, arms, walls, provisions: Apsaros is inspected, funded and permanent—a working address of the Roman world.

This website takes the form of his document: a periplus, a voyage told through the places met along a shore.

  4. 2ND CENTURY

    THE GARRISON CITY

Apsaros grows into one of Rome’s principal garrisons on the eastern Black Sea—baths, barracks and an aqueduct.

Christian tradition holds that the Apostle Matthias was buried within its walls.

  5. 6TH CENTURY

    THE BYZANTINE STRONGHOLD

Apsaros returns to strategic use under Byzantium. Its walls are restored and the fortress enters another imperial age.

    Empires change; the ground endures.

  6. 16TH CENTURY

    THE OTTOMAN FRONTIER

The fortress stands watch at the edge of another empire, commanding the coast and the roads beyond it.

Every power that held this shore understood the value of this ground.

  7. THE PRESENT

    THE STONES SPEAK

Excavation opens the record: coins, mosaics, military structures, the plan of the Roman baths. The fortress becomes a museum-reserve—and two thousand years return to view.

Apsaros was not invented for the project. It is the ancient name of this ground, returned to it.

CHAPTER II

THE GROUND

Forty hectares between a Roman fortress and the Black Sea.

At Gonio, forty hectares of seafront extend between open water and one of the eastern Black Sea’s most important ancient fortresses. Batumi International Airport is minutes away; the Turkish border, fifteen minutes.

To the west, the uninterrupted horizon. To the east, two thousand years of history. The masterplan takes its order from both.

Behind the shore, the foothills rise into the ancient Colchic rainforest. Warm Black Sea rain feeds the forest, the waterfalls and the deep green of the mountains—the force that gives this coast its extraordinary character.

CHAPTER III

THE GATE RISES

A complete world, alive from the beginning.

Apsaros is conceived not as a collection of buildings but as a whole. Its opening chapter brings together an internationally branded flagship hotel, a landmark gaming and entertainment destination, a five-thousand-seat immersive venue, a cosmopolitan promenade, a destination spa, marina, beach club and Heritage Precinct beside the fortress—the scale, energy and diversity of an established international resort, present on the first day.

Later phases extend the destination through residences and a medical-wellness and longevity estate in the foothills. They deepen Apsaros; they do not define it.

The one element of Apsaros that could exist nowhere else.

CHAPTER IV

THE SEASONS

Twelve months. Four distinct seasons.

Apsaros is designed around the full rhythm of the year. The venue, the entertainment core, the promenade, the destination spa and the wellness estate create a different reason to arrive in every season.

Each season reveals another Apsaros.

  • WINTER

Performance, gaming, thermal rituals and luminous nights.

  • SPRING

Rainforest trails, waterfalls and a coast returning to colour.

  • SUMMER

The sea, the beach club and the marina in full sail.

  • AUTUMN

The wine harvest, warm rain and the long table.

CHAPTER V

THE INVITATION

The record continues.

Two thousand years ago, this gate received travellers. It is preparing to receive them again.

Apsaros is in active development, with master planning, operator selection and the first works underway. Follow the project as its architecture, partnerships and opening chapters are revealed.

Announcements will be few—and worth receiving.
